Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a “robot dog”? Xiaomi CyberDog 2 is a new robot dog that was presented by the Chinese company in August 2023. The robot is similar to Spot from Boston Dynamics. It has a few key differences, including a lower price and a more open software model. Probably such a dog will not replace a real four-legged friend. However, it would certainly be a substitute for an animal for someone who cannot devote themselves to a living creature, but would like to have a symbol of canine companionship 🙂
What are the characteristics of the invention in question? First of all, engineers took care of an efficient engine that allows it to reach speeds of up to 3.2 m/s. In addition, it has an NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX processor, which provides the computing power necessary to perform complex tasks. Recognizing objects and avoiding obstacles are among these tasks. The GPS navigation system allows him to navigate unknown terrain. The robot dog can be connected to mobile devices via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. CyberDog 2 also offers a number of additional features such as voice control and remote control. Our “dog device” can be expanded with new accessories using three USB-C ports and one HDMI port.

CyberDog 2 has dimensions of 807 x 602 x 206 mm and weighs 14 kg, and its maximum load is 14 kg. The robot dog has four limbs with three joints each and built-in sensors: touch sensor, light sensor and ultrasonic distance sensor. Our CyberDog is able to perform various activities such as recovering from a fall, shaking hands, dancing, turning around, gesturing and sitting. It is compatible with Ubuntu 18.04+ ROS 2 operating system.

However, CyberDog 2 has a few drawbacks, including its high price and availability only in China. A team of creative and passionate engineers equipped it to maximize the potential of its mechanical muscles and heart, thanks to motion control algorithms. It is equipped with the latest generation of computers, including the NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX processor, which provides 21 TOPS computing power. Imaging technologies such as AI camera, dual-sensor camera and ultra-wide angle camera allow it to be well oriented in the field. In addition, scientists equipped it with a navigation system that allows it to avoid obstacles. Researchers also ensured the presence of voice control and remote control. In the future, engineers will take care of new accessories, so it is worth following its development. Maybe scientists will work on the structure of the fur? 🙂 The robot dog is currently available in China. We don’t know yet when and if it will be available for purchase in Europe. However, we can be sure of one thing: artificial intelligence is a field that is constantly evolving.
