The research group from St. Petersburg State University is researching the use of polymers containing a “redox-active nitroxyl group”. These studies are to serve as a material for electrochemical energy storage. The result of this research is the invention of a modern Russian battery. The advantage of these polymers is their high energy density as well as good charging and discharging speeds. The result of this research is the invention of a modern and efficient Russian battery. All thanks to the so-called fast redox kinetics.
However, implementation of this technology has proved difficult due to their insufficient electrical conductivity, which makes it difficult to accumulate charge. However, scientists overcame these drawbacks by synthesizing a polymer based on a nickel-salen (NiSalen) complex. The particles of this metal-polymer act as a molecular wire to which energy-consuming nitroxyl hangers are attached. Through the molecular architecture of the material, we achieve high energy efficiency over a wide temperature range. The modern and efficient Russian battery is a breakthrough in energy saving and environmental protection.
The first premises regarding the invention appeared in 2016. Scientists, while studying the discussed charge transport mechanism in this class of compounds, found that there are two key directions of development. First of all, these compounds can be used as a protective layer to cover the main battery cable. Otherwise it would be made of traditional lithium-ion materials. They can be used as an active ingredient in electrochemical energy storage materials. The polymer research project ran for several years. Ultimately, however, the researchers found that only one was stable and effective enough.

The operation of the Russian battery was demonstrated in a series of experiments. At this stage, however, it is still lagging behind in terms of capacity. It is 30 to 40 percent lower than that of lithium-ion batteries. Currently, however, scientists are working on improving this indicator, while maintaining the speed of charging and discharging the battery. Russian scientists prove that the battery can operate in low temperatures. This is a great option where fast charging is crucial.
Most importantly – the batteries are safe to use. There is nothing that could endanger combustion, unlike the commonly used cobalt-based batteries. These modern batteries certainly contain much less metals that can harm the environment. Nickel is present in our polymer in a small amount, but much less than in lithium-ion batteries. A modern and efficient Russian battery deserves the name of a highly ecological and safe product.
