What is basalt flour and what are its main advantages?
If we are happy owners of even a small garden, the following tips are addressed to us! We are talking about basalt flour. For some it sounds enigmatic, so we will explain what this preparation is and what it is used for. Basalt meal is nothing more than an ecological agent that contains macro and microelements. Importantly, it is completely safe for both us and animals. We can also successfully use it in gardening to enrich the soil with nutrients from which plants derive. As for the form that we have at our disposal, the preparation in question can be purchased as powdered basalt rock. From a chemical point of view, this agent contains a lot of compounds that are beneficial to our crops. These compounds include:
- silicon oxide – this compound is the largest percentage share among all those contained in basalt flour, over 40%;
- magnesium, potassium, calcium oxide;
- manganese, copper, iodine, selenium, boron, phosphorus, iron and zinc.
An important advantage is the fact that all the above-mentioned chemical compounds and elements contained in basalt flour are released slowly. It is therefore impossible to over-fertilize the land. However, the preparation in question should be used on low-class soils. What else does it give the soil? It not only fertilizes, but also prevents the development of many diseases, while improving the soil structure. In addition, the substances contained in the basalt meal prepare the plants for the arrival of cold weather, causing frost resistance. This is possible due to the fact that basalt meal does not contain nitrogen, so we do not have to worry about increased growth here. Abandoning the development of plants manifested in the lignification of young stems and shoots is certainly a good protection against winter.
How to use basalt flour?
Basalt meal is well suited for potted plants and those that perform a decorative function. It is also worth fertilizing lawns, fruit trees and shrubs. Remember, however, that due to the slightly alkaline reaction of the preparation in question, we should not use it to fertilize plants that feel good in acidic soil. An example of such plants are heathers or azaleas. Our preparation works great when confronted with unwanted moss on the lawn. Its advantages also include the possibility of using it throughout the year: both as an enrichment of the substrate elements before the start of cultivation, and as a typical autumn fertilizer. We usually use from about 1.5 kg to about 3 kg of the product to fertilize ten square meters of area. Slightly smaller amounts of the preparation are needed to feed the soil already fertilized. In the case of potted plants, use a symbolic amount of flour for one flower container. We can also mix the discussed preparation with the ground, which we will cover our freshly planted plants.

Basalt meal should also be added to natural compost. We will enrich it then and make sure that our plants receive all the best from nature. In addition, the product in question also acts as a fungicide and helps prevent the negative effects of aphids and snails. In this way, basalt flour fulfills the function of a plant protection agent.
